Shoes: Mia 2 Bouquet Flats
I know this may come as a surprise to you, but I shopped a bit on Black Friday! ;) I did almost *all* of it from the comfort of my own home, dressed in my pajamas however! On Black Friday, Amazon had some Lightning Deals going and one of them was for the Mia 2 Bouquet flats. They looked cute and I need some more cute casual flats so I ordered a pair. They arrived today and not only are they adorable but they are AMAZINGLY comfortable. These could very easily be worn to work in for a wedding.
While I bought mine from Amazon, currently the best price for these shoes is on Sears (along with the best size selection). Google around to see if you can find better deals though. I ordered mine on Friday in grey, currently ordered the black as well!
Price: $23.99 at Sears (after the 20% sale still active from Cyber Monday they are $19.19!)

Shabby Apple: Cleopatra
A few weeks ago I was invited to a friend's wedding. I was super excited to be a GUEST for once! The day of the wedding I was all set to rock out my Badgley Mischka LBD and then I talked to the bride. Her photographer (friend's stepdad) told her that he'd be an extra $500 to cover the reception and started throwing all of these last minute charges at her. So they ended up opting to only use him for the ceremony and formal pictures. I know I am a bit of a pushover but I also couldn't let my friend have bad pictures from her wedding. So I sadly put away the LBD and pulled out my newest Shabby Apple purchase (thanks to Groupon!) which would be a bit more friendly to the crazy positions I get in during a day AND was a bit more formal than my normal wear for a wedding.
The Cleopatra was the perfect hybrid dress for me. I was able to look guest-like but still able to move around quite easy due to the cotton fabric and length. I highly recommend it for more formal affairs or for those ladies out there wanting to look a bit more elegant at weddings without hampering your shooting style.

Ann Taylor: Silk/Cotton/Cashmere Sweater
I know that this sweater from Ann Taylor doesn't look a lot different from the sweater I just posted but it's the finer details that make it just different enough for me to have to list it. The sleeves are a bit shorter, which is more ideal for my photogs down south. They also have a bit of a puff to them which makes the Anne of Green Gables lover in me die in delight. (sidenote: RIP Aunt Hetty from Road to Avonlea - such a heartbreaker!)
Cost: $29.99

Ann Taylor: Scoopneck Sweater
I am sure I'm not the only woman out there that HATES her upper arms. Well, like most women I hate my entire body but that's a subject for a different day. LOL. I love elbow length tops because they are SO flattering to the upper arms, even if you hate them as I do. This sweater from Ann Taylor caught my eye due to the flattering cut and sleeve length. It's a simple lightweight sweater that can easily be worn in fall and winter. The other colors are also pretty and I'm picking a few up!
Cost: $39.99

Ann Taylor: Tee with Grosgrain Bow
It's been another long break in blogging but if you are a photographer you know how busy this time of the year can be! September-beginning of October is my busiest time of the year and it's been crazy!
This top from Ann Taylor caught my eye because it has delicate detailing but isn't over the top. I think this could easily slip into my wedding wardrobe space in the closet and yet it still could be worn during the week too. Win!

Another Groupon Deal!
Today's deal at Groupon (all cities) is $25 for $50 worth of items at Gap! Only one per person and it has to be used in store but there are a lot of great items there that you could easily use to wear to weddings. Some of my favorites are the Silk Georgette Scoop T, Perfect Shirt, Applique V-neck T, Modern Boot Pants and Classic Blazer.

The Limited: Overt Ruffle Cardigan
This cardigan from The Limited is perfect for those in between months from summer to winter. It's short sleeved and open front so that it's not quite as warm but still warm enough to keep you from getting chilled if shooting in a cool reception or outside at night. I love the ruffle detailing around the edge that isn't overly done.
Cost: $59.50

Shabby Apple Groupon
While the clothes are a smidge too frilly for working weddings, the clothes at Shabby Apple are just too darn cute to not promote here, the HUGE bonus is that today on Cleveland's Groupon you can get a $100 voucher for $40!!!! Not only are their dresses modest, but they also have maternity too! WOOT!
What I Wear: Merona Scoop Neck Dress
Readers, I have a confession to make... I wore a dress to shoot in, despite swearing I'd never do it. We've had some crazy high temperatures here in Ohio the past few weeks - and even before we were in the upper 80's to 90's we've had some humidity that is just unbearable. So unbearable that in fact that even wearing my beloved gauchos seemed impossible. I had just got this dress from Target and thought well heck, I'll try it. While there were definitely times I wished I had on pants, I have to confess that it was VERY comfortable to shoot in and cool! I thought about wearing shorts beneath them but that'd kind of defeat the point of wearing a dress by adding more layers. While I don't think this will always be a go-to outfit, I must admit that I felt more professional being in a dress. These dresses are sold out online but you can still find them in some Target stores. I have this dress in coral, brown AND black - that's how much I love it. VERY comfy and you can still wear a normal bra with it which is a huge selling point for me. It can also easily be worn in the colder months with a cardigan!
If this is something that appeals to you, keep your eye out at your local Target as I HIGHLY recommend this dress!!!

Ann Taylor: Oyster Sateen Beaded Blouse
While this top from Ann Taylor may not be able to be worn on its own, it makes a KILLER shell to go beneath a suit jacket (or can be worn solo if you've got killer arms). It's detailed enough to dress up your outfit, yet comfortable enough to not restrict you when shooting. Win win! Bonus - it's on sale.

White House Black Market: Fishtail Tissue Tee
I ADORE this top from White House Black Market. The wrap design is always flattering and it has a rosette to boot! SCORE! The price is a bit high for a t-shirt IMHO but I can stalk it until it goes on sale (or they have really good codes out).

The Limited: Studded Shoulder Top
I know I've been slacking here... I apologize! It's the busy season for me here in Ohio and I've been editing and shooting like a crazy lady! :) I'm back today with a few new items to fill the gap!
This top from The Limited is a new top that I really love. It's got a bit of extra detailing on the shoulders to make it pop but nothing that says "I'm going out to the clubs after I get done shooting." I also love cowl necks, for me, they work really well. It's a great top for the summer since it's sleeveless!

Ann Taylor LOFT: Knit Skirt with Cascade Ruffle
I'll be the first to admit that it's rare that I wear a skirt to a wedding. However, sometimes you have a really formal affair, your pants are all dirty or you are just in a skirt mood. When browsing Ann Taylor Loft today, I came across this skirt and immediately bought it - especially since it's on sale right now. It's perfect for work and for play! The length should make it a bit easier to work in (you can always put shorts on underneath if you are worried about the flash factor!) than some of the minis that are popular today!
Cost: $19.75 (currently 50% off no code needed!)

Target: Gaucho Pants
Confession: I sometimes rock the unstylish look at weddings - especially in the summer. I wear a pair of gaucho pants (which are now pretty much out of style) that I picked up at Kohl's last summer that are rayon, light and SO wonderful to wear in the summer. They dry fast (bonus for sweat and for rain) and are ridiculously comfortable. They aren't the most stylish thing... but sometimes comfort wins. Someone recently asked what I wear for a non-beach outdoor wedding and I sent her these from Target as they are the closest thing I can find to what I wear currently. In the past, I've also worn dressy capri pants (usually from Old Navy) but I find that these are easier to move in and a lot lighter!

Ann Taylor: Rosette Necklace Tee
Last winter, I picked up a copy of one of the gossip rags "Style" watch and fell in LOVE with a t-shirt that they featured from Ann Taylor. However, it wasn't on their website and I didn't feel like driving an hour to the closest Ann Taylor. So I called the store and ordered this t-shirt in two colors. I am still in LOVE with this shirt and just about jumped over the moon to see they brought it back with summer colors AND BLACK!!!! I just ordered this faster than you can blink because I ADORE this shirt. ADORE! I always get compliments on it and to me, it's the shirt that started the new trend of rosettes on t-shirts as it was the first place I saw doing it. This trumps all other tops as THE perfect wedding t-shirt!!!
Note that I have experience with this shirt and adorable as it is, make sure you hand wish and line dry!!! It is VERY delicate!

Crocs Malindi
Three seasons ago, I picked up the Malindi flats from Crocs after a dismal performance by their cuter cousin Alice (holy bisters batman!). I had higher hopes for these shoes as they had more breathing room than the Alice and had rave reviews. I wore them around town and they were super comfy so I put them on for my trip to NYC. Before I even hit the streets I was crying on the inside as blisters covered my outside and every single step was pain. I ended up paying WAY too much for a pair of flip flops at J Crew just to be done with these shoes. I wore them to one wedding, hoping that since callouses had built up that I'd not have the same issues, however sadly the callouses just birthed blisters on TOP of the callouses and I tossed these shoes to the back of my closet and haven't been seen since.
My first full season was a year of shoe experimenting and this shoe was the first of many failures that summer, until I found and loved the Verdent. Now though the Verdent is dying a slow death as the pillow tops aren't springing back any more and they are quite battered. I had a double header this past weekend and the thought of putting them back on made me want to weep. I ran downstairs for something and had tossed on the Malindi's after spying them in the closet and they immediately made my feet happy. I figured they were worth giving another shot to and wore them for the second wedding, tossing in the Verdents in case of blistering.
I am so happy to report that they never once gave me a blister and my feet were still quite happy at the end of the day and so were my legs. In the past double headers have left me feeling much older than my 31 years and this time I was perfectly fine and not sore at all. I'm not sure what all has changed with my feet since I first had an issue with them but I am SO happy it did. I plan on wearing these suckers until I either get blisters again or wear them out.
Happy feet = happy photographer!

Today I got a great tip from reader Marnie of Crescendo Photography that these pants from White House Black Market are her go-to pants for weddings, especially the ones that are fancier or in the winter. Banana Republic: 323 Martin Flared Pant
I recently ordered these pants from Banana Republic because I needed some new pants to take the place of the ones from last year that got a bit grungy by the end of the year. Mud, dirt - you name it - it's on pants from last year from all the positions and places I go during a day. The reviews of these pants were pretty great so I took a hopeful leap and ordered them online. While I love shopping for tops online, it's hard for me to buy pants as they all fit so differently. The GAP family is the worst, at any given time I can usually fit into at least 3 different sizes of pants from them given the cut of the pants. It's crazy - Old Navy is the worst when it comes to this. More on that with a different post.
These pants made me happy though. They are just a smidge under the waist so you have a bit of a lower rise but not low enough that when you bend over to take a picture you aren't showing the guests your panties. They are stretchy so they fit wonderfully. The only thing is I think they'd be a bit too heavy for hot summer weddings, but okay outside of that.
The major complaint among the reviewers is how badly they shrink when drying. I'd recommend drip-drying to evade this problem which will also allow the fabric to stretch back out (since another complaint is that they not only shrink, but you loose length). All in all very wearable and comfortable. Keep your eye on sales of these as I was able to pick them up much cheaper than they are now.

Ann Taylor: Knot Front Top
We're starting to shift into (theorectically, it's not here in Ohio!) warmer months so the stores are starting to come out with new collections for the summer. This top at Ann Taylor immediately caught my eye because I love this style of draping. Some girls may have to wear a cami beneath if you are busty but I love the lines and the style of it. It has just enough extra 'pop' to give it a dressy feeling while it still looks comfy enough to move around in easily. If you do the buy one get one 50% off sale that is currently going on, I suggest picking this up in my favorite color, royal blue (or blueberry jam if you're Ann Taylor)!

New York & Co: Chelsea Cardigan - Rosette
I've had my eye on this cardigan from New York & Company for a while. It's cute, it falls into my love for pretty details and it's black! WIN WIN WIN!! I must admit though, I have a love/hate relationship with NY&CO. Either I LOVE everything they offer, or I hate it all. It's one of those weird stores for me - Express is the same way. While this cardigan may not be ideal for summer weddings, it is for the weird in-between times like now where it's cool and damp and not quite warm yet (at least here in gloomy Ohio).

Born Peony Shoe Hunt
When browsing the interwebs today, I came across these shoes from Born and immediately decided that I MUST have them... if they came in black. The first year as a wedding photographer, I wore sandals from Born and they were so.darn.comfy. I only stopped after a groomsman gagged at the sight of toes (oh how I wish I was kidding, ironically the bridesmaids were all in strappy sandals too so it was interesting to say the least!) and switched to closed toed shoes. As luck would have it, these shoes do come in black as a quick Google search told me but... no where had them in size 9 that I could find. SADNESS! Another in depth search on Google found me a couple places that did have it in stock and of course the winning store was my favorite store, Amazon. If you could be BFFs with a store, Amazon would have the other half of my BFF necklace as they are my FAVORITE. Oh my, did I just totally date myself with the necklace bit? Ahh, the 80's/early 90's. Anywho.... these shoes are ON ORDER from Amazon and will be here within the week, hopefully before my first wedding of the 'high' season this weekend. There will be an update with a full report when I get these babies and wear them!
Full-ish Report: I got these last week and while they are VERY comfy, the backs of the shoes hit just a smidge high and I fear that a full day in them would lead to blisters on the backs of the heels. Since they are leather, I think they'll break in and be great for a full day on a shoot so I'm gradually breaking them in. I will update again when I have worn them for a shoot. For now, it's still my trusty Verdent's that are winning the shoe race.
The Limited: Cardigan with Corsage
It's another grey item! I can't help but add this sweater from The Limited into the lineup though, it's SO darn cute. It also is short sleeved which is a great layering piece for summer. Again, flower embellishments... sorry. I know, I know! But they just SCREAM wedding to me. The bonus about this sweater is that it's currently on sale.

What I Wear: Shoes: Radiance Sandals
Every year when I go to WPPI I have the same repeating problem, blisters - and lots of them. I adore cute shoes, but I've found out that rarely do cute + Vegas go well together - until I found these sandals at Kohl's. I wore them on the trip there. I wore them the first day. I wore them the second day. I wore them just about EVERY day after finding out that they were cute AND comfortable! I also had ZERO blisters and the first time I wore them was when I flew out!
While I wouldn't wear these for the super formal weddings, they are dressy enough (with a proper pedicure of course) to wear to most summer weddings and are insanely comfortable. I even like them more than my Softspots, and that's saying a lot. They are also SUPER quiet when walking in them. I'm not kidding when I say they're like walking on sponges. They're somewhat bouncy and super comfy. Your feet will thank me, even if you just wear these for the summer.

Banana Republic: Sleeveless Pintuck Top
Have I mentioned that I love sales??? I got the notice that Banana Republic was having a sale and figured that I'd go and see if they had any great tops that I liked. When I saw this top I immediately fell in love. It's hard to go wrong with a simple black button up but it's rare that they add anything to make it special. I adore the pintucked sleeves on this top SO much, such a cute and elegant detail. Just enough to dress it up for a wedding and take it a step beyond your basic button up.

Express: Flutter-Sleeve Banded-Bottom Top
This top from Express has all the components that I LOVE about tops. It has flutter sleeves, a modest neckline, comfort fit and a banded bottom. I have a pink shirt very similar to this and it fits well and looks great on.

The day that I purchased this shirt at Ann Taylor, I fell in love with these shoes which are a perfect compliment to the shirt. Born: Stowaway Flats
Prior to my falling in love with my Softspots, I wore a pair of Born sandals to a few weddings. While I loved the comfort of the shoes, I felt that even though the sandals were dressy, it was still just enough underdressed to bother me - even with a pedicure! I feel more at ease wearing closed toe shoes at weddings - I realize that is a complete personal preference though! At the time, Born did not offer flats but now they have joined in on the flats game and I'm so glad to see it.
The Stowaways appear to be an ideal flat for weddings. They have a smidge of a heel, have cushioning and are leather. They aren't out until May however but I would highly recommend keeping your eye out at your local Born retailer for a pair to try on before wedding season is in full swing!

Target: Maternity Sleeveless Ruffle Top
I had a request to add on some maternity wear to the line up so I poked around to see what I could find. Please keep in mind that I've never been pregnant so I am pretty clueless about this other than going off of the "oh that's cute in the pic" factor so bear with me if you have been there and know that a certain style only works on the maternity models and not in real life. This top from Target immediately caught my eye as adorable. I love the ruffle detailing at the neckline and the bow around the front. It's maternity without being peasanty and I like that. I fear I'm going to be a very picky maternity clothes wearer as I tend to not like the "HI I HAVE A BABY IN HERE" shirts/dresses. The cost is what seals the deal for this cute top which could either rock on its own or with a layering item. Win!
Cost: $16.99
Lane Bryant: Sleeveless Rosette Top
I had a request to make sure I don't leave out any lady no matter what her size so here's a super cute top from Lane Bryant. I love the detailing along the neckline on this top. Make sure you check out the page to see it better on another color (LOVE the coral color!). It'd be perfect for an outdoor wedding or paired up with a layering cardi or jacket. You can't go wrong with rosettes at a wedding!

Ann Taylor Loft: Corsage Top
Ann Taylor Loft is definitely a store that I frequent, perhaps a bit too much. It's been a love affair ever since they opened a store in my mall! Recently, this top caught my eye as just fancy enough to be worn at weddings and not eye catching enough to be distracting. I'm not completely sold on the neckline being jagged but I think that in the black it's not as raggedy looking as in the lighter colors. As you may be seeing, I'm a big fan of details on tops - I tend to not wear necklaces as they get caught on my straps of bags and cameras so I try to decorate the clothing to make up for it!

GAP: Hip Slung Pants
Pants.... oh my they are my kryptonite. They can either fit famously or horribly and I struggle the most with finding a pair that fits well. On top of fitting well, you also need them to cover so that when you are bent down shooting you don't have to worry about your crack showing. Yes I went there but ladies you know what I'm talking about.
The wonderful thing about these pants from Gap is that they cover what they need to cover, are stylish and most of all they cover your crack!! I love the spandex as well. They also come in navy which is a great option for when you don't want to wear all black. One thing I love about Gap and the Gap chain is that they have various sizes and options for fit.
Cost: $54.50
Anthropologie: Layer Cardigan
One thing I have found over the years is that for me, suit jackets are great - but a bit limiting in movement when it comes to shooting. I tend to find myself gravitating towards knits for layering items instead of jackets (but I do own a few jackets as well). One of the great things about the current trends is that it's in to layer cardigans over shirts so there is an abundance of perfect layering cardigans available.
I love Anthropologie and I've had my eyes on this cardigan for quite some time. It's a lightweight cardigan so it makes it perfect for summer weather over a sleeveless top or in the spring and fall months for over heavier shirts. There is also a dark grey option for those that don't wear all black but try to remain in darker clothing.
Cost: $98
What I Wear: Shoes
One of the hardest things for me to find to wear to weddings was shoes. I am a bit of a shoe freak so just any shoe wouldn't do. I know that many wear tennis shoes to shoot weddings in but for me, no matter how much the tennis shoe is dolled up, it's still a tennis shoe and it's not fit to wear tennis shoes to a wedding. I tried the Croc flats (two different styles) and both times I ended up with blisters before the end of the day. My first season shooting, I tried a million different shoes and each one was eliminated from the running for various reasons - usually because at the end of the day my feet and legs were still hurting.
Last May, I came across Softspots' Verdent shoes and I am so glad that I did, I've gone through two pairs now and I LOVE these shoes. They are comfortable beyond words, I no longer come home and immediately put my feet up. They have a bit of a heel, so I don't have to worry about hemming my pants (and I'll admit, I'm a heel kind of girl). The big seller is that they are virtually silent when walking and that's a big plus when it comes to shooting in churches that have marble floors. I can't rave enough about these shoes. They are cute, comfy and perfect for me. The downside? They have been discontinued. They are still able to be found online but it isn't easy (I recommend Google).
If you want this shoe and can't find the Verdent in your size, I recommend searching for the Softspots Star. While it's not in their current lineup, it is available in quite a few places on the internet. The only difference between the two shoes is that the Verdent has a 1.25" heel while the Star has a 1.50" heel.
Ann Taylor: The Perfect Wedding Tee
This past week I was shopping at Ann Taylor and as soon as I laid eyes on this t-shirt I said that it was the perfect wedding t-shirt. The detailing of the pearls, ribbons and rhinestones on this shirt are just enough to dress up your everyday t-shirt without being too showy for a wedding. This shirt looks great on its own or layered under a suit jacket or cardigan. If black isn't your 'thing' at weddings, there are other color options as well.

As a professional wedding photographer one thing has always been a struggle for me... finding cute clothes to wear!!! Men have it easy, dress pants, shirt & tie with the optional jacket (preferably in dark colors). For women, it's not so easy! We have to look professional, be able to move without showing any girly bits and be comfortable at the same time. While suits are always an option, it's not always easy to wear a suit during the warm months and it's always not an option to just take off the jacket.
When discussing these woes with some fellow women photographers, they gave me the idea of starting a blog posting items that would work well for weddings and also be fashionable. While I may not be a style maven, I do love clothes so I figured that I would give it a whirl!
I'm also a lover of a good deal so look for sale items and codes whenever I can find them!
